In 2002, a small group of friends involved in high performance hockey competing in major national leagues decided to organize an event to enjoy their sport through a more social and less competitive perspective.
Thereby, the Open Ourense tournament was born, called “open” because everybody could participate. It happened the first weekend of September.
The success was such that the next years the event grew up in number of participants and in organizational complexity. Hence, in 2004, to give legal entity to the organization, Club Deportivo Open was created as a non profit sport organization. This club is fully registered and legally established and is the official organizer of all the events.
In 2006 it was celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Open Ourense Hockey tournament being consolidated as a reference in the beginning of each hockey season.
Also in 2006, to increases the number of participants and with the aim to improve the social sports an another activity; the 1st International Veterans Open, was organized with the participation of teams from various countries. This tournament will have continuity in the future and cause the foundation of the first team in the club: the veterans. They have taken part also in a tournament in Bremen (Germany) in May 2007, their first international activity outside Spain.
Club Deportivo Open has as a main objective: the promotion, diffusion and support to the sport of field hockey. Especially in the social aspect of the sport, trying to make it a meeting point, the development of the human and sport values and converts this sport in a reference for the youth in our city and region.
We are located in Ourense, in the autonomic region of Galicia (northwest of SPAIN), 100 km away from Vigo at the Atlantic seaside, very close to Portugal border.
A city with a population of 108.000 sited at the side of the Miño River with great artistic and thermal interest.
We have direct communication with Madrid by highway (4 hours driving) and with two airports (Vigo and Santiago de Compostela) at less than one hour also by highway. Both airports have many national & European connections. Porto (Portugal) International Airport is only at two hours driving distance.
